Topical products are easy to use, but small mistakes—too much product, repeated applications, heat exposure, or contact with eyes—can create avoidable problems.
1. Read the current label first
Directions and warnings differ by product. Check the intended body area, amount, frequency, age restrictions, and maximum duration of use.
2. Use on clean, intact skin
Unless the label specifically says otherwise, do not apply to cuts, rashes, infections, or irritated skin. Clean and dry the area before use.
3. Consider a patch test
For a new cosmetic or botanical blend, applying a small amount to a limited area can help reveal irritation. Follow the label and do not use a patch test as proof that a product is safe for all areas.
4. Start with the labeled amount
More product is not automatically better. Overapplication can increase irritation or ingredient exposure.
5. Wash your hands
Wash thoroughly after applying products that can cool, warm, numb, or irritate—unless your hands are the treatment area and the label directs otherwise.
6. Be careful with heat and coverings
Heating pads, hot baths, tight wraps, or bandages may intensify exposure and should not be combined with a topical product unless the label clearly permits it.
7. Avoid stacking similar products
Using multiple creams with overlapping active ingredients can increase exposure. Review all labels and ask a pharmacist when unsure.
8. Stop if something feels wrong
Stop use and seek guidance for significant burning, rash, swelling, blistering, dizziness, breathing difficulty, or any unexpected reaction. Emergency symptoms require immediate care.
